In his 2023 report, then Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Vivek Murthy, warned about the devastating health effects of loneliness and isolation. The findings, based on decades of research, should ring alarm bells for families with older loved ones living alone.

According to the report, a lack of social connection is as deadly as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and poses a greater risk to longevity than obesity and physical inactivity. What’s more, poor social relationships increase the risk of heart disease and stroke by up to 32%. For older adults especially, evidence also links social isolation and loneliness with accelerated cognitive decline and a 50% higher risk of developing dementia.

Faced with these dire consequences, it’s critical for older adults — especially those living alone — to find ways to connect with others and build meaningful relationships. Unfortunately, that’s often easier said than done.

Many older adults struggle with limited mobility due to arthritis or other conditions. Even bathing and dressing can become difficult. When driving is no longer an option, it’s hard for older adults to maintain an active social life which can lead to increased isolation, loneliness, and poor health outcomes.

Discover how small-home assisted living and memory support foster connection.

Orchard Inn at The Baldwin is southern New Hampshire’s only small-home assisted living and memory support community. Unlike traditional assisted living and memory care centers, Orchard Inn consists of four households that accommodate just 10 residents each. This creates a more intimate environment where residents feel at home and are more likely to engage in the life of the household.

With no long hallways to navigate, residents need only step out of their spacious private suites to dine with friends, participate in meal preparation if they wish, join others in planned programs and activities, socialize around the fireplace, or enjoy fresh air on the outdoor terrace.

Dedicated team members build trust and a sense of belonging.

Highly trained team members provide a steady, reliable presence in residents’ lives. They get to know each resident’s life story, how they like to spend their days, and the specific types of care and assistance they need and want. This ensures care and assistance are personalized to each individual resident.

A dedicated activities director develops programs and activities that reflect residents’ interests. Fitness and educational programs, social events, recreational activities, and more provide opportunities for engagement, which foster a sense of community.

With a dedicated team of trusted, familiar faces and a personal, small-home approach to physical, social, and emotional support for each resident, Orchard Inn is where residents find comfort, belonging, and purpose. More than a place to live, it’s a place where they can truly flourish.

Orchard Inn is now welcoming new residents for assisted living and memory support. To learn more about our innovative, small-home approach or to inquire about direct admission, use our contact form or call 603.699.0100.
