You may have come across the term “small-home model” when searching for assisted living. As the name implies, the small-home model is more like a family home than a traditional assisted living community. The smaller, more intimate environment, coupled with a consistent, highly trained team of caregivers, offers residents more personalized support, fosters increased engagement and connection, and empowers residents with a greater sense of autonomy, purpose, and joy in their daily lives.
The first small-home models were built more than 20 years ago, replacing institutional living with something radically better: a model for living that feels like home. Orchard Inn at The Baldwin is among the few communities — the only one in southern New Hampshire — to embrace the small-home model for assisted living and memory support, and we’ve seen the difference it’s made for residents and their family members.
Small-home assisted living and memory support is designed for connection.
It stands to reason that a smaller, homelike setting will foster greater connection and engagement among residents and team members. At Orchard Inn, the design is intentional. Four households accommodate just 10 residents each. Spacious, private suites are arranged around an open kitchen, dining, and living space. Residents need only step out of their private suites to dine with neighbors, participate in programs and activities, relax by the living room fireplace, or enjoy fresh air on the outdoor terrace.
Unlike traditional settings, there are no long hallways to navigate that feel isolating and discourage engagement. At Orchard Inn, everything is within easy reach with no barriers to prevent residents from participating in the life of the household.
Dedicated team members provide more personalized support.
The traditional nursing home model requires more staff to look after more residents, which makes it hard for residents to build relationships with the people who provide their care. At Orchard Inn, a dedicated team of two per household provides a consistent and reliable presence in residents’ lives. Team members get to know the residents on a more personal level than at a traditional assisted living or memory support community. They know the type of care and assistance residents need and want. They learn how residents like to spend their days and plan activities and programs that reflect residents’ preferences. And they’re able to build meaningful relationships with residents, making them feel part of an extended family that has their best interests at heart.
